Before we discuss the story behind Meera and Krishna relation, let's get to know a little more about Meera Bai first.
Meera Bai was the daughter of a very prominent Rajput King of Ancient India, Raja Ratan Singh and his wife, Veera Kumari. She was born in the year 1498 in the Khurki district of Rajasthan. She was born with beauty and elegance on her face. She is described to have big-bold eyes, a finely sculpted face, and a breathtaking smile that drew everyone's attention to her.
Even as a child, she was kind and friendly to everyone around her. But in meerabai story of life, fate had something else planned for her. She had to deal with the death of both her parents at a very early age, first her father and then her mother. She had to move to her grandparents house after the demise. Meera Bai was just ten years old when her grandfather, Rao Dudaji and his wife, abandoned her.
Back in the days, the most popular way to unite kingdoms and make alliances was to form a partnership through marriage. So Rana Sangram Singh of Mewar asked for Meera's hand in marriage to his son, Prince Kumar Bhojraj, in order to establish good ties between the two most powerful Rajput kingdoms. Unfortunately, girls had little say in their marriages back then. The Rajputs were well-known for their lack of vision, impulsive desires and selfishness. They only listened to their gurus who were very ritualistic and unaware of reality.
Eventually, Meera Bai was forced to get married into the Mewar Sisodia Raj dynasty to King Bhojraj of Udaipur. However, her husband could not live long after they got married. After the death of her husband, her family members began pressuring her to perform Sati with her spouse, but Meera Bai refused since all the family members had become one-sided and gone completely against Meera Bai. Her husband was cremated in her absence.
Meera Bai did not bring any changes in her ways and her lifestyle after the death of her husband because she considered Girdhar (Lord Krishna) to be her only spouse and never accepted Bhojraj as her husband. She used to practice Hari Kirtans and devote all of her time to Lord Krishna after her husband died. With time, her love and devotion only became bigger and stronger towards Shri Krishna.
The beautiful tale of Meera and Krishna relation begins when Meera bai was very young. When she was around four years of age, Meera went to a wedding with her mother. Fascinated by the concept of a wedding, she wondered who would be her future spouse and asked about the same, to her mother. Smiling at Meerabai's innocence, her mother looked around and found a beautiful idol of Sri Krishna. She then pointed towards that idol and stated that Meera would marry Krishna and this is the moment where meera krishna story began.
Veera Kumari (Meerabai's mother) quickly forgot about the joke. But Meerabai, on the other hand, fell in love with Krishna at that moment. She began to adore Krishna, and thus, this is how the world started to witness the most beautiful display of meera krishna story filled with pure love, loyalty, and dedication.
She got converted into a true follower of Lord Krishna, whose heart only and only belonged to Lord Krishna. She used to go to temples and sing and dance in front of Krishna's idol, but her in-laws did not approve of this attitude, and they even tried to kill her many times. Meera Bai then left for Dwarka and Vrindavan, dissatisfied and disappointed with her family. In Krishna's devotion, people used to worship and honour the Goddess Meera Bai also. Meera Bai had attained that ultimate condition in which there is no duality, only one. Meera and Krishna had become one.
We all know how deeply Meera was in Love with Krishna. She dedicated her entire life only in devotion for Krishna. The question that many people want answer, if Krishna also loved Meera or even knew about Meera's immense love and devotion?
So, here's the other side of Meera and Krishna's story that demonstrates how much Sri Krishna loved her as much as she loved him:
When Bhoj Raj (Meerabai's lawfully married husband) discovered Meera's love for Lord Krishna, he was upset, but he did approve of her Bhakti. His family, on the other hand, did not. They repeatedly attempted to kill Meera. Various attempts were made to get rid of Mirabai. Rana's family once sent a basket filled with garlands and a snake to murder Meera. Instead of the snake, Meera discovered Krishna's statue when she opened the basket. Krishna was the one who saved her life. There were several attempts to murder Meera, but Krishna always spared her life.
Another story tells us that Krishna once transformed poison into Amrit when Meera was given poison in the guise of Prasad. Surprisingly, Meera was aware that she was receiving poison in the form of prasad. But she did not hesitate even once before consuming it because she knew Krishna would save her, and he did. That poison turned into a sweet nectar. Other attempts were also made, like once Rana made her a bed of nails, and when Mira tried to sleep on it, it transformed into a bed of roses. But Lord Krishna was always there to make sure nothing happened to Meera. These tales show us that it wasn't just Meera's love story, Meera did mean something to Lord Krishna as well.
Finally, Meera Bai died in the Dwarka State in 1556. Nobody knows what happened to her. There are several theories on the subject. Meerabai was a prominent Bhakti Saint, and Hindu structures such as Chittorgarh fort and other Hindu places are dedicated in her memory. Her death, however, was not the end of the meera and krishna relation. Even today, people adore this beautiful tale and also listen to many poems and hymns written by Meera, showing her love and devotion for Krishna. This beautiful and purest meera krishna story is also taken as an inspiration for many individuals.
